Capitals sign Wayne Simpson to two-way contract

The Washington Capitals signed right winger Wayne Simpson Tuesday to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced.

Simpson, 27, has spent the last three years in the American Hockey League and has never played in the NHL. The deal is worth a league-minimum $650,000 if Simpson plays in the NHL and $140,000 if he plays in the AHL.

Simpson had 49 points (16 goals, 33 assists) with the Providence Bruins last season. Simpson’s signing is most likely to fill the roster for the Hershey Bears, the Capitals’ AHL affiliate.

The Capitals, though, need to fill their fourth line and Simpson, like the rest of their minor league prospects, will get a chance in training camp and the preseason to make the roster.
