Wednesday night's tussle in San Jose against the Sharks marked game one of the Washington Capitals' longest road trip of the season, and they made the most of it by taking away two points in a seesaw, 5-4 overtime win.
“It’s really big,” coach Barry Trotz said, via the Washington Post. “You get that first one, you hopefully take that momentum and build off it.”
The Capitals have now won two straight in San Jose after going winless in 12-straight games dating back to 1992. They'll take the win, despite a couple of fluky bounces and screens that aided Washington along the way.
“It’s big for us, big for the confidence, because we know it was a tough building,” forward Troy Brouwer said. “We did get lucky in a couple instances, our third goal, and arguably even our overtime goal. Going into a couple tough games again with the fathers coming in the road, meeting us in L.A. tomorrow, we want to start the trip off with a good feeling, and we did.”
Washington gets two days of rest before meeting up with the defending Stanley Cup champion LA Kings in Southern California - game two of what may be a pivotal four-game swing for the Caps when it comes to their playoff standing in the Eastern Conference.
