Team Russia defeated Finland 5-2 in the gold medal game to capture their fourth World Championship title in the past seven years (2008, 2009, 2012). They were undefeated throughout the tournament by winning all ten of their games.
Though Russia's captain Alex Ovechkin was injured in his right leg after Marcus Kink's hip check during the preliminary-round game between Germany and Russia last week, Ovechkin returned to score the game-tying goal during the gold medal game.
Alex Ovechkin finished the tournament with four goals and seven assists. He also had the team high of 52 shots on goal in a matter of nine games.
Sergei Shirojov of Team Russia put the first point on the board at the 10:45 mark of the first period after a shot from the left face-off circle. Finland retaliated with three seconds left in the first period when Iiro Pakarinen scored.
During the second period, Finland got the first lead of the game when Olli Palola rebounded Jarkko Immonen's shot on goal. Ovechkin tied the game less than a minute later after an uncommon Ovechkin-move of backhanding it past Pekka Rinne at the front of the net.
Evgeni Malkin brought the Russians back up to a lead with a power play goal at 15:38 of the second period. Danis Zaripov cushioned their lead with another power play goal in the third period and Viktor Tikhonoc secured the goal medal with yet another power play goal with less than five minutes left in regulation.
Next May, Russia will try to defend their title at the 2015 IIHF World Championship in Czech Republic.
