Canucks counting on Ben Hutton to step up

People of a certain vintage will remember the popular commercials in the 1970s and ’80s for U.S. brokerage firm E. F. Hutton. The money line in those ads was: “When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen.”

The Vancouver Canucks have their own Hutton and the increasingly popular line around the club is this: “When Ben Hutton is on the ice, people notice.”

A long shot to make the Canucks’ roster when training camp began, the fuzzy-cheeked, always-smiling defenceman suddenly finds himself part of the first unit pairing alongside his roommate on the road, Chris Tanev.

A leg injury that sidelined veteran Alex Edler has forced the move up the depth chart, but it’s still heady territory for a 22-year-old with all of four American Hockey League games to his credit late last season after leaving the University of Maine following his junior year.
