Utah debuts designer, hand-crafted helmets for USC game

SALT LAKE CITY — The Univeristy of Utah football program debuted a new helmet for its blackout-game matchup against conference opponent USC Friday.

The designer helmets, which are individually hand-painted, have a granite-like texture and have a unique serial number painted on them. No two helmet is the same, according to Utah athletics.

Utah director of equipment operations Kelly Sharitt and assistant Cody Heidbreder came up with the idea, and Dave and Julie Layton of Layton Construction donated the helmets.

Navy, which is also sponsored by Under Armour, had a similar hand-painted helmet in its matchup against Army last season.
