Kicking off the Sun Belt Championship as the No. 5 seed, the softball team (30-25) picked up its 30th win of the season while splitting Wednesday at the Troy Softball Complex.
Prior to the tournament, junior infielder Sandra Mendoza, sophomore pitcher Sam Clakley, sophomore outfielder Krista Rude and freshman infielder Aileen Garcia earned Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors Tuesday.
Round No. 1: UTA 9, Coastal Carolina 1 (5)
The Mavericks opened the tournament by run ruling the Chanticleers 9-1 in five innings. It was UTA’s first run rule since joining the conference in 2014.
