A late run by seniors Jhonathan Gonzalez and Pablo Colvee wasn’t enough to keep the men’s tennis team’s season alive.

Defending conference champions, the Mavericks fell to Georgia Southern University 4-3 in the Sun Belt Championship’s first round Friday at City Park Tennis Courts in New Orleans.

UTA took an early lead by securing the doubles point with wins from Gonzalez and sophomore Mauricio Del Rio (7-5) and senior Daniel Armengol and sophomore Guanarteme Nuez (6-2).

Nuez won his singles match 7-5, 6-3, but three Mavericks fell, putting them behind 3-2. Gonzalez won the final two sets of his singles match 6-2, 6-7 to tie the match at three, but Colvee dropped his match 6-4, 7-6, 6-1 to give the Eagles the win.
