USC quarterback Sam Darnold expected an opening.
As Taylor McNamara ran 10 yards down the middle of the field and arrived alongside Utah linebacker Sunia Tauteoli, Darnold zipped a pass.
By the time McNamara had passed Tauteoli by a couple yards, the ball arrived.
“That really wowed me,” Trojans coach Clay Helton said.
The timing needed to be exact.
The Utes sat in a Cover 2 defense. If Darnold had waited longer before starting his delivery, McNamara would have been even with one of the two safeties and the throw would have come too late.
