USC freshman Jamel Cook enjoys breakout spring

LOS ANGELES >> Spring practices are not always the best gauge of how players perform in the fall. A wide receiver can often find himself taking advantage of walk-on cornerbacks. An offensive lineman can dominate a defensive line depleted from graduation.

But USC redshirt freshman defensive back Jamel Cook’s made a case this week to become a potential starter next season.

Cook intercepted three passes during Tuesday’s practice then came back Thursday and delivered a couple of big hits. One of those interceptions came against quarterback Sam Darnold.

The interesting part is USC is trying to make the 6-foot-4, 195-pound Cook a nickel back.
