They were picking 17th and after several years of picking at the top of the draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs were content to just relax and pick the best player available when it was their turn. Instead, Timothy Liljegren fell into their lap.
Whether or not he turns out is, at this point, immaterial – he was the #2 ranked player going into this season and I had people in October trying to convince me that the Leafs should tank for another year in order to get him. For the 17th pick, that’s about as good as it gets.
