More than half of the buildings that will house Olympic athletes during next month's Rio Games have yet to pass safety inspections, an organizing committee official acknowledged Monday.
Concerns over the progress of the Olympic Village, where approximately 18,000 athletes and officials from around the world will stay during the Games, arose last week when Australian officials arrived to "inhabitable" conditions. And with the Aug. 5 opening ceremony less than two weeks away, it's been revealed that 19 of the 31 buildings still need to be approved for occupation.
“[The buildings] should have been tested a long time ago,” Rio 2016 spokesperson Mario Andrada told The Guardian.
