Jets Sign the Veteran Quarterback Josh Johnson

The Jets’ depth chart at quarterback is murky beyond the starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, and it grew a little more muddled Thursday when they signed the veteran Josh Johnson.

Johnson joins Matt Flynn, signed last week, and the rookie Bryce Petty at a position that could benefit from some clarity before the Jets’ season opener Sept. 13 against the Cleveland Browns.

At worst, Johnson will serve as insurance in case Flynn, who is not scheduled to play Saturday against the Giants because of a lingering hamstring injury, cannot heal in time to back up Fitzpatrick. The Jets have not promised Flynn a spot on the 53-man roster, and it is possible, if unlikely, that Johnson – or a quarterback currently on another team – overtakes him.
