Ashley Stroehlein of WBTV relayed the update.
Whittaker saw limited action during the first three-quarters of the season. Then a foot injury suffered by starter Jonathan Stewart against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13 thrust the 27-year-old backup into a more high-profile role for a while.
The Texas product spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, San Diego Chargers and Cleveland Browns before landing with the Panthers in 2014.
