After Punch, Rangers’ Ryan McDonagh Is Out With a Concussion

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh, the Rangers’ captain, was ruled out of Monday’s game against the Devils at Madison Square Garden with what the team said was a concussion, which he sustained when he was punched in the face during a game Saturday in Philadelphia.

Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds received a match penalty and a game misconduct for decking McDonagh in the first period of the Rangers’ 3-2 shootout victory, but Rangers Coach Alain Vigneault was still upset that Simmonds would not face further punishment from the N.H.L.

“We had a feeling that he had a concussion, but we weren’t 100 percent sure; he had some symptoms,” Vigneault said after the Rangers’ morning skate Monday.
