PAZARDZHIK, Bulgaria — Floyd Mayweather isn’t lying when he boasts, time and again, about having “never been beaten.”

At 47-0 going into his long-anticipated clash with Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2) this Saturday, Mayweather is indeed undefeated as a professional. But contrary to the carefully crafted perception of his perpetual invincibility, he also knows what it is like to lose when it matters most.

In 1996, Mayweather’s amateur career came to a sudden halt in the semifinals of the Olympics in Atlanta, where he tasted defeat against an opponent who subsequently lost his way, and has been heard from little since.
