INDIANAPOLIS — Juan Pablo Montoya came back from an early crash to win the 99th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, just a car length ahead of his teammate Will Power.
The crash, in which Montoya’s car was slammed from behind by Simona de Silvestro while the cars were idling under a yellow caution flag 11 laps into the 200-lap event, dropped Montoya to last among the car’s still running at that point. Montoya, who also won the race in 2000, dashed into the pits for repairs and spent the rest of the race trying to overcome the deficit.
