Cardinals Fire Rising Front-Office Star Amid Hacking Investigation

As the F.B.I. continues its investigation into a breach of the Houston Astros’ database, the St. Louis Cardinals have fired their scouting director, Chris Correa, who once worked under Jeff Luhnow before Luhnow left the Cardinals to be Houston’s general manager.

An official in baseball with direct knowledge of the decision confirmed the firing, which was first reported by The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. John Mozeliak, the Cardinals’ general manager, confirmed the decision to the newspaper but did not elaborate.

While Correa’s lawyer denied to The Post-Dispatch that his client had done anything illegal, the report, citing an anonymous source, said that Correa had admitted to hacking the Astros’ database to see if the team had stolen any of the Cardinals’ proprietary information.
