Amid Sell-Off, Miami Is Shut Out by Retooled Nationals

Max Scherzer allowed three hits over seven innings, and Jonathan Papelbon got his first save for the Washington Nationals in their 1-0 win over the host Miami Marlins on Thursday.

Papelbon, acquired Tuesday from Philadelphia, earned his 18th save in 18 chances this season. The team’s former closer Drew Storen pitched a perfect eighth.

The Marlins also entered the trading frenzy, completing a 13-player deal with the Dodgers and the Braves on Thursday. Miami sent starter Mat Latos and first baseman Michael Morse to Los Angeles, which also acquired starter Alex Wood, the injured pitcher Bronson Arroyo, and relievers Luis Avilan and Jim Johnson from Atlanta.
