Texas punter Michael Dickson named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year

Despite not playing in a bowl game, Texas punter Michael Dickson is taking home some hardware this season.

The sophomore from Australia was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year Wednesday after an impressive 2016 campaign. He is just the fourth punter to receive the award since its inception in 2005.

Dickson's standout campaign included a 47.4-yard punting average — third in the FBS — and 25 punts of over 50 yards. He was a big-time force in the field position game, pinning 28 punts inside his opponents' 20-yard line this season.

A former Australian rules football player, Dickson said in November he hoped to average 47 yards per punt this season after struggling as a freshman in 2015.
