We caught up with former Texas and NFL wide receiver Quan Cosby to talk about Longhorns' matchup with in-state rival Texas Tech this weekend. Cosby covers the Texas football team for IMG Radio Network. You can follow him on Twitter at @QCosby17.
The Texas Longhorns (3-5, 2-3 in Big 12) are coming off their most disappointing game of the season against Kansas State, losing 23-0 and being shut out for the first time since 2004. Despite that, Cosby thinks thinks the Longhorns will respond well against Texas Tech on Saturday.
"It's the perfect week for a turnaround, with Tech having only one conference win," he explained, but stressed the need for Texas' offense to improve for that to happen. "They haven't been playing on the same level as Baylor, TCU, and some of those teams, but they have the physical talent to be better than they have been - they just have to execute better."
Still, Cosby says he thinks the Longhorns can win the rest of their games this season.
"They’re that physically talented, but that hasn’t been the case from an execution standpoint. They don't have a guy who has made that play when they need it and take them to that next level. The problem I have, and everyone around the program has, is that we don't know who’s going to show up each week. It's up to them how bad they want it."
The Red Raiders are coming off of a bad week themselves, getting blown out 82-27 by TCU. Texas Tech has struggled mightily this season, but Cosby thinks Texas will have a tougher time on Saturday than many expect.
"Tech's loss was as embarrassing as it can be last week, so they’ll play as hard as they ever have. Texas is their bowl game, so they’ll play Texas as good as anyone," he said. "When I played here, we knew that. Texas gets everyone’s best. [Texas Tech head coach Kliff] Kingsbury will have them ready. The only thing that will make their season now is beating Texas or a ranked team, and looking at the records, it's Texas who they believe they can beat. I know they’ll be ready to play."
Texas and Texas Tech will kick off Saturday in Lubbock at 7:30 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.
