Longhorns land highly rated point guard from Houston Yates

Unwittingly, Texas basketball coach Shaka Smart helped develop Jacob Young into a high-major prospect.

It’s only fitting that Smart gets to finish the job he started.

Young, a four-star guard entering his senior year at Yates High in Houston, has been groomed in a system tailored after Smart’s “Havoc” approach to the game. It stands to reason he’ll make a smooth transition to playing for the Longhorns, who gained his commitment on Tuesday.

“I love that style of play, going up and down the court,” Young said. “That triggered my commitment to Texas.”

The 6-foot-1-inch, 175-pound Young learned the pressure-based system from Jawann McClellan, a former Arizona Wildcat who has long admired Smart’s teachings.
