After starting 1-2 for the second straight season, the Texas Longhorns aren't deterred in regards to their ultimate goal - a Big 12 championship.

“I think anybody in this league is always a contender going into the first [conference] game,” senior receiver John Harris said, via Garrett Callahan of the Star-Telegram. “We are excited to go back out there and get going in our season. This is a big step for us in conference play.”

Last season, Texas recovered from its tough start en route to challenging Baylor in the conference title game. If they are to do it this season, head coach Charlie Strong believes that now-starting quarterback Tyrone Swoopes will be the X-factor.

“He’s realized it’s his offense, and his confidence is just building each and every day,” Strong said. “And that’s what you like out of him. The thing he’s doing now is he’s become a student of the game, which he never did before. He never put his time in. Usually if you don’t think you’re going to play you’re not going to put your time in.”

With Swoopes now putting his time into football and a winnable game against Kansas opening things off, the Longhorns believe they have as good a shot as any to claim the Big 12 as theirs.
