Texas A&M DL Jay Arnold retires due to shoulder issues

Texas A&M defensive lineman Jay Arnold will retire from football due to chronic shoulder issues. Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle reported the development.

A rising junior, Arnold registered 22 tackles and 3.5 sacks across two seasons with the Aggies. He had shoulder surgery in the offseason and as he told Zwerneman, “the shoulder wasn’t going to hold up for another season.”

Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin will certainly miss Arnold’s 6-foot-4, 284 pound frame on the line, as he has made upgrading the defense a priority this offseason. Texas A&M has become known for having strong offensive attacks under Sumlin, but finished 103rd in total defense last season and 121st in 2013.
