Tennessee hires Charlton Warren as secondary coach

Tennessee announced Monday that it has hired Charlton Warren to take over as the program’s secondary coach. Warren, who had been North Carolina’s secondary coach, replaces Willie Martinez, who is not returning to the Vols.

Warren, 38, had been the Tar Heels’ secondary coach for the past two seasons. This season, North Carolina had the 10th-best pass defense in the country. Past coaching stops for Warren include Air Force and Nebraska.

Vols coach Butch Jones and defensive coordinator Bob Shoop will count on Warren to turn around a unit that struggled badly in 2016. Although an injury to starter Cam Sutton didn’t help matters, the Volunteers expected to finish better than 72nd in the nation in passing defense.
