Patrick van Aanholt's heroics salvage Sunderland a point vs. West Brom

Sunderland salvaged a point from a game they looked doomed to lose when a move of irresistible determination, started and finished by substitute Patrick van Aanholt, brought a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. Whatever the Dutchman's finish lacked in quality, it provided fitting reward for one player's sheer resolve.

After enjoying the best of the opening period, David Moyes' side went behind on 35 minutes when the hugely disappointing Jan Kirchhoff surrendered possession in midfield and a gloriously weighted pass from Matt Phillips enabled Nacer Chadli to outpace defenders and beat Jordan Pickford.
