Leake blanks Marlins for six innings, holds 3-0 lead

JUPITER, Fla. • Righthander Mike Leake, turning in his best outing of the spring, blanked the Miami Marlins for six innings Sunday, scattering seven hits, as the Cardinals took a 3-0 lead.

Matt Carpenter’s sacrifice fly scored Dexter Fowler, who had singled for his second hit, for the Cardinals’ third run in the fifth inning. Earlier, Yadier Molina and Fowler each had hit his first homer of the spring, with Molina’s coming on the third he pitch he saw after his return from playing for silver medalist Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.

Leake, who induced four double plays in the first four innings in his last start, got three more on Sunday, the first two started by second baseman Kolten Wong, who had an acrobatic game in the field.
