Cards 'not on a great path' but salvage series finale

The word most often used to describe retrieving something that has been wrecked or is in disrepair, only has a positive connotation around a ballpark because of the alternative.

To “salvage” a series means to avoid the only thing worse.

A sweep.

The Pittsburgh Pirates arrived at Busch Stadium for Sunday’s national television showcase game with a chance to sweep a three-game series in St. Louis for the first time since before Randal Grichuk was born. Two returns, including Grichuk’s from the minors, kept the Bucs from that first sweep since May 1991.
