won the men’s pole vault at the Tom Jones Memorial on Friday with the second-best height in school history.
The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native became the fourth person in school history to clear a height of more than 17 feet when he soared over the bar set at 17 feet, 3.50 inches (5.13m). Shepherd’s previous best was 16-8.75 set earlier this season. He was less than an inch away from eclipsing the school record of 17-4.25, which was set by Jonathon Miller in 2004.
