How A Boycott Could Wreak Havoc On The USA's World Cup Group

The USA's World Cup future will be decided during a massively important game against Germany on Thursday...unless a boycott throws the entire group on its head.

Ghana's national team, which currently sits third in Group G with one point, is at a breaking point. The players haven't been paid bonuses that were promised to them before the World Cup kicked off, and reports out of the African country suggest that players have refused to travel to Brasilia (the site of their game against Portugal on Thursday) until the situation is resolved.

Things have deteriorated to the point where Ghanian president John Dramani Mahama has been forced to step in, promising the players that their wages (~$75,000 US to each player) would be delivered shortly. The money, according to Ghana Soccernet, has been loaded onto a jet that departed Accra on Tuesday evening.

A boycott would result in an automatic 3-0 win for Portugal...which would virtually assure the United States goes through. In that scenario, the Americans would have to lose to Germany by two or more goals to miss out on the knockout stage.
