Sharks re-sign speedy Swedish forward

SAN JOSE — With NHL teams pushing to get faster and faster every season, the Sharks locked down their speediest forward for two more years.

Restricted free agent Marcus Sorensen signed a two-year contract with the SharksTuesday, putting him in position to compete for a roster spot in training camp this fall.

The Sharks will be depending on youngsters, such as Sorensen, Timo Meier and Danny O’Regan, to step up and fill the void left by Patrick Marleau’s departure to the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 2.

Sorensen recorded four points (1g, 3a) in 19 games with the Sharks last season and he made his presence felt in the team’s Stanley Cup playoff series against the Edmonton Oilers in April, using his speed to make plays at the bottom of the lineup while collecting two points (1g, 1a).
