Sharks Ink White and What Are the Islanders Trying To Do?

Doug Wilson has not made the huge move that many fans are secretly hoping for (shipping Marleau or grabbing Doughty), but picking up Colin White was a great decision. White's stay-at-home style will provide much needed balance to a group made up of mostly offensive-minded Dmen and young guys. White also learned a lot from Devil's legends Scott Stevens and Ken Daneyko. White is fearless. He should see PK time and will never back down from other teams' enforcers.

White brings depth, grit, and winning experience to the defensive group, but Doug Wilson still has not added the missing piece to the bottom six. If he doesn't feel like overpaying right away for a fading veteran (like JP Dumont, Cory Stillman, or Chris Drury), he should feel free to extend a camp invite to John Madden like Vancouver did with Owen Nolan. There's no risk in giving the guy a tryout. While the Sharks are still without a legitimate scoring threat in their bottom six, there are so few options on the market that hoping a guy like Dumont can regain his touch is simply not worth the money.

In other news, Nabby is attending camp with the Isles. An article on the Bleacher Report today speculated that Nabokov could end up as the Isles' starter come October and that Rick DiPietro may be the odd man out. Poulin and Montoya both deserve a look for the other spot. Poulin was 4-2-1 with .924 save percentage last season, and Montoya went 12-6-5 for the Isles. Those numbers are far better than the horrendous stats DiPietro put up last season. And while Nabby starting would probably come as a relief to Islanders fans, DiPietro is signed through 2021...so what do you do with him? And what do you do with all the other goalies? The Isles' GM Garth Snow is known for making moves that nobody understands, so having four capable goaltenders might not be any weirder than rotating DiPietro, Biron and Roloson...or signing an unproven goalie (DiPiedtro) to an absurd 15 year deal.

Colin White doesn't light the lamp often, but he definitely can light up some forwards who keep their heads down.
