Oilers win draft lottery, will pick first

The Edmonton Oilers won the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.

The Oilers bucked the odds Saturday in Toronto by winning the NHL draft lottery for the No. 1 pick. Their reward is a chance to draft McDavid, a center described as a once-in-a-generation talent. Buffalo will pick second, Arizona third and the Sharks ninth.

“I can’t tell you how exciting it is for us to win this lottery,” Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish said. “It’s a game-changer.”

Edmonton had an 11.5 percent chance of winning the lottery based on its 28th-place finish. At 20 percent, Buffalo had the best odds to win, followed by Arizona at 13.
