Cueto's rehab start pushed back by illness

Cueto, who's 6-7 with a 4.59 ERA, is recovering from a mild right flexor strain, incurred as he was overcoming blister problems that bothered him throughout most of the season. Last season's All-Star Game starter for the National League hasn't pitched for the Giants since July 14.

Monday's scratch should barely affect Cueto's timetable for rejoining San Francisco's starting rotation. He'll likely make another rehab start Sunday or Monday before returning to the Giants.

• Second baseman Joe Panik (concussion) participated in pregame drills, a likely precursor to performing Tuesday for Sacramento. Since Sacramento has a scheduled off-day Wednesday, Panik probably will get his work in with Class A Advanced San Jose on Wednesday.
