If called, Matt Cain said, he’d make himself available as a reliever in September.
“Whatever we’ve got to do to get in the postseason, I’m up for it,” Cain said. “That’s what this group is about, and none of us are above that.”
Cain was placed on the disabled list Friday with elbow nerve irritation, clearing the way for Chris Heston to start Sunday. Heston was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
Cain said he felt the irritation in his last start, an 8-5 loss to the Cubs in which he surrendered six runs on eight hits.
