SF Giants Rumors: San Francisco still in the mix for free agent RHP James Shields

The San Francisco Giants have lost some key pieces from their 2014 World Series championship team this offseason, but GM Brian Sabean may be looking at free agent righty James Shields to jump start their fortunes this winter.

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, "the final Shields numbers are expected to be close to the five years and $110 million remaining (if the option is picked up) on the Cole Hamels deal, according to one major league source who was privy to Shields’s demands. The Giants and Red Sox are in the picture, and the Yankees may be another suitor."

If Cafardo's salary projections prove correct, the Giants will have to break the bank in order to fend off the deep-pocketed Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees for his services. However, after squaring off with him twice in the 2014 World Series, the Giants appear to like what they saw and are showing the willingness to at least engage the possibility of handing Shields a mega-deal.

Shields finished 14-8 for the AL champion Kansas City Royals last season, posting a 3.21 ERA with a K/BB ratio over 4 and a 1.18 WHIP.
