SAN FRANCISCO — Conventional wisdom would suggest that it’s time for Giants reliever Mark Melancon to call it a season.

The Giants $62 million offseason acquisition continues to pitch with discomfort in his throwing arm (right pronator), he’s contemplating surgery and his team is 38 games out of first place with six weeks left on the calendar.

What is the point of pitching out a string when the season is essentially over?

“It’s a good question,” Melancon said, confirming he’s told the club that it’s his desire to pitch through the discomfort.

“I want to make sure that guys understand that, first of all, I want to be out there and show that it’s important to battle back and to fight through, and I think we have a lot to prove this year still even though we’re not going to the playoffs.
