49ers Coaching Rumors Roundup: Shanahan Meeting With Team, Sean Payton An Option?

With the NFL regular season over, several teams that missed the playoffs are surrounded by rumors. One of those teams is the 5-11 San Francisco 49ers. The team fired head coach Jim Tomsula after just one season. The 49ers are in the process of searching for Tomsula's replacement, which means there are plenty of rumors floating around.

Here are the latest rumors surrounding the 49ers' search for a new head coach.

Shanahan Meeting With Team?
Mike Shanahan has already expressed interest in returning to coaching with the 49ers, and he'll be getting an interview tomorrow.

Shanahan hasn't coached since 2013 with the Redskins.

UPDATE:

Shanahan is also a candidate for the Dolphins' job.

Sean Payton An Option?
The 49ers might land the biggest fish of all this offseason, as current Saints head coach Sean Payton has interest in coaching the team.

Payton's daughter attends college at Pepperdine University, so a move to the 49ers would put him closer to her. Landing Payton won't be easy and would likely cost a draft pick, but it'd be a massive upgrade over the departed Tomsula.

Anthony Lynn Interviewing?
The 49ers are setting up interviews with several candidates, including Bills RB coach Anthony Lynn.

Lynn is also an assistant head coach for the Bills and served under former 49ers' OC Greg Roman this season in Buffalo. Interviewing Lynn also fulfills the team's Rooney Rule requirement.
