Rutgers athletics $36.3 million subsidy out of company of Power 5, Big Ten

PISCATAWAY – Rutgers athletics subsidy may be on its way down, but it still is the highest in the nation.

Even with cutting nearly $11 million off its national-record subsidy during Fiscal Year 2014, the $36.3 million subsidy relied upon to balance the budget, as first reported in February by Gannett New Jersey, is more than was needed by any other school, according to a USA Today database.

The money comes from student fees and direct government or institutional support.

Rutgers is the only school currently in a Power Five Conference that ranked among the 40 highest subsidy amounts for July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014, when it was a member of the American Athletic Conference.
