Chat Sports Presents: The 9 Worst Tweets Of 2014

2014 was a banner year for Twitter. At this point, pretty much every major story in the sports world plays out on Twitter before it lands anywhere else...and that can be both good and bad. From brands, to athletes, to media figureheads, 2014 gave us plenty of lowlights in the Twittersphere...so here are the 9 most ridiculous.

9. Tell us something we don't know

BadTweet7

So, the Cowboys had the last laugh here by turning out to be better than we all expected, but that doesn't make this poorly-chosen hashtag less funny. The social media team quickly changed things up when informed by tens of thousands of people that the Cowboys did indeed sUK, but it was too late.

8. But coach, I didn't know you felt that way...

BadTweet6

This isn't "bad" like the other tweets on this list are bad, it just reflects that Will Muschamp has no idea how to use Twitter correctly. Accidentally-revealed direct messages like this one could have been way more embarrassing, but this still earned the former Florida head coach a spot on our list. While accidentally recruiting everyone who follows him on Twitter probably isn't what got Muschamp fired, moments like this definitely didn't help his case.

7. Stick to Cereal

BadTweet5

Frosted Flakes spokesman spokestiger Tony the Tiger likes talking about sports on Twitter, but tragically, he isn't very good at it (SB Nation has the full, sad story). We aren't sure whether this is a bad joke, a cry for help, or possibly both...and the improperly-used hashtag is just the icing on the cake.

6. That isn't actually a pun, Darren

BadTweet2

When ESPN business reporter Darren Rovell isn't out building his #brand, he's busy in his basement lab, cooking up "puns" like this one. Next time, keep it in your drafts folder.

5. Stephen A. Smith's Glass Case of Emotion

BadTweet4

What year is it? Because last time we checked, it was okay for women to have opinions on things - especially on a guy like Roger Goodell, who incompetently botched his league's domestic violence policy (and the enforcement of that policy) for years. You can disagree with calls for Goodell to step down, Stephen, but if they make you this mad, it says a lot more about you than it does about them.

4. When Analogies Go Bad

BadTweet3

Sometimes, you really shouldn't press send, no matter how clever you think your tweet is. ESPN and former SI columnist Rick Reilly saw golfer Martin Kaymer tearing up the U.S. Open, and somehow decided comparing him to blitzkreig-era Nazi Germany was both amusing and appropriate. It was neither.

3. The Patriots probably should have skipped this one

BadTweet9The New England Patriots celebrated reaching one million followers by sending out a customized image to thousands of followers - all you had to do to get one was RT a tweet they sent out earlier in the day. Unfortunately, the offer extended to everyone who responded, even those with ridiculously inappropriate twitter handles containing everyone's least favorite racial slur. Not cool.

2. Sources confirn

BadTweet8

Just for some context, this tweet went up a full hour after LeBron James published a Sports Illustrated article detailing his decision to return to Cleveland. Not an S.I. writer, not an anonymous dude on a message board...LEBRON JAMES HIMSELF. Yet somehow, despite crediting the article, Chris Broussard thought it was important to clarify that the information was correct only because his source had "confirned" it. A+ reporting, Chris.

1. The Year of the Commodore

BadTweet1

Skip Bayless has somehow managed to turn an ability to yell loudly and be wrong about things into a seven-figure contract at ESPN, and we'd be kind of impressed if that didn't mean we have to listen to him all the time. Instead of making this a list of 10 Skip Bayless tweets (which was easily possible), we decided to honor his finest moment at the #1 spot.
