SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Portland men's tennis juniors Michail Pervolarakis and Mathieu Garcia each advanced to the Round of 16 in singles play after day one of the Battle of the Bay Classic at the California Tennis Club. Portland and tennis powerhouse USC are the only two programs with multiple players in the Round of 16.
Garcia won both of his matches in straight sets, while Pervolarakis closed the day with a straight sets win. The tandem, which are the two lone Pilots to travel to the tournament, will open play in doubles tomorrow morning.
"I'm obviously very pleased with our guys today," said Portland assistant coach Olivier Jamin, who traveled with the duo.
