Mike Tomlin: Steelers have paid 'special attention' to QB prospects for years

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger floated the possibility of retirement early in the offseason, prompting a lot of breathless chatter about whether this is the year the Steelers should target a future starting quarterback in the NFL draft.

Turns out they’ve been doing it for years. They just haven’t pulled the trigger, as coach Mike Tomlin told it Monday at the NFL owner’s meetings in Phoenix. Via Steelers.com’s Teresa Varley:

“We’ve been in that mentality,” said Tomlin, who has been in consistent contact with Roethlisberger since the season ended. “Our experience in this business and the realities of this business put us in that mindset.
