Paul Zeise: If deal is right, Pirates should trade Melancon

Multiple reports say teams are pursuing a deal with the Pirates for close Mark Melancon.

The latest team to inquire appears to be the Washington Nationals, who are in the market for back end of the bullpen help.

If the deal is right, the Pirates should do it.

Melancon is obviously a big part of the Pirates’ success over the last few years and is one of the best closers in baseball.

But he costs too much money and is going to be gone after this season anyway because he price continues to rise.

He is, however, at the trade deadline a very valuable commodity to contenders whose fatal flaw is the back end of their bullpen.
