Padres looking at Pirates' Sofield as candidate for manager job, according to MLB Network

The San Diego Padres are planning to interview Pirates third-base coach Rick Sofield for their managerial vacancy, according to a report from MLB Network’s Peter Gammons.

Sofield just completed his third season on the Pirates’ coaching staff and his first as third-base coach. He coached first base for the previous two seasons before swapping with Nick Leyva. He also serves as the Pirates’ base-running and outfield coach.

After spending parts of three seasons in the majors, from 1979-81 with the Minnesota Twins, Sofield, 58, coached in college. He coached his alma mater, South Carolina, from 1984-86 and Utah from 1987-94.
