As Francisco Cervelli heads to disabled list, Chris Stewart starts again

The Pirates placed catcher Francisco Cervelli on the 10-day disabled list Thursday because of lingering left wrist inflammation. Cervelli removed himself mid-game Sunday and said afterward he was unable to provide offensively the way he needed to. The Pirates promoted Elias Diaz from Class AAA Indianapolis Tuesday yet hoped to avoid losing Cervelli to the DL.

This is Cervelli’s first trip to the 10-day disabled list this season — he had surgery last year to repair a broken hamate bone in his left hand — though he did spend two stints on the seven-day concussion list after taking a foul tip off his mask in a game in early June.
