Pirates acquiing relief pitcher Soria from Tigers for a prospect

CINCINNATI — The Pirates traded for Detroit Tigers closer Joakim Soria tonight in a move that immediately strengthens the back end of their bullpen.

In return, the Pirates traded Class AA Altoona infielder JaCoby Jones to the Tigers.

Soria, 31, has served as the Tigers’ closer this season and saved 23 games. He has a 2.85 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 41 innings. He is making $7 million and will become a free agent after the season.

Pairing Soria with the late-inning relief trio of Mark Melancon, Tony Watson and Jared Hughes would strengthen an already-solid back end of the bullpen.
