Team Europe beats Sweden, 3-2, in World Cup of Hockey semifinal

TORONTO -- Tomas Tatar jammed in a shot at 3:43 of overtime to give Team Europe a 3-2 victory over Sweden in a World Cup of Hockey semifinal at the Air Canada Centre today.

Europe, a heavy underdog going into the tournament, will face Canada in a best-of-three championship series beginning here Tuesday.

Nicklas Backstrom put Sweden up, 1-0, at 2:31 of the second period, when he threw in an Anton Stralman rebound past Europe goalie Jaroslav Halak from the front edge of the crease.

Europe challenged the goal, arguing that winger Patric Hornqvist, who plays for the Penguins, interfered with Halak, but that appeal was rejected.
