'Pretty good interest' in Penguins UFAs could complicate free agency

Sunday marked the first day NHL players who will be unrestricted free agents on July 1 can have contact with other clubs. They can’t sign anything. It’s just talk.

Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford was in touch with his own UFAs-to-be as well, and his takeaway from those conversations went like this: The Penguins won’t be the only dog at the bowl on Saturday.

“It seems that there’s going to be pretty good interest in those players,” Rutherford said of his UFAs. “Until you ultimately hear, you have to hang in there and see what happens.

“They’re looking at what their possibilities are on July 1.
