Penguins remain optimistic Evgeni Malkin will return soon

When Evgeni Malkin missed a March 17 game against the Devils due to a shoulder injury he sustained four days prior while blocking a shot, the thought was that it wasn’t anything series.

“I don’t think it’s a long-term thing,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said at the time. “This is going to be a day-to-day thing.”

It’s likely Malkin will miss his seventh consecutive game on Wednesday when the Blackhawks visit PPG Paints Arena, but Sullivan isn’t worried about the amount of time it’s taken Malkin to get back in the lineup.

Sullivan said Malkin skated Tuesday before practice and is progressing precisely how the Penguins medical staff has expected, even if a time line for his return has either not been determined or divulged.
