The Penguins earned a 3-2 win against the Washington Capitals in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series Thursday at Verizon Center in Washington. Here are some initial impressions from the win.
It was over when: Nick Bonino scored on a breakaway with a little over 7 minutes left in regulation. Washington’s Evgeny Kuznetsov had tied the game, 2-2, a few minutes before, and the Capitals were buzzing, generating a lot of pressure in the Penguins’ defensive end, but Bonino sprung free on a rush, took a pass from Tom Wilson and deflated the Verizon Center with a shot past goalie Braden Holtby.
