Center Mike Vecchione now free to sign; will he choose the Flyers?

Sometime in the next week, after he has some heart-to-heart talks with his parents and his agent, speedy Union senior center Mike Vecchione will sign with an NHL team as a free agent.

The Flyers are high on the list.

Vecchione, a strong contender to win the Hobey Baker Award as the nation’s top collegiate player, is free to sign because his collegiate season ended Saturday with Union’s 10-3 loss to Penn State in an NCAA tournament game in Cincinnati.

Vecchione, 24, Union’s all-time leading scorer, told the Daily Gazette he wants to sign with a team that gives him the best opportunity to play, a team that “needs centers and complements my style of play.
